Amirthi Zoological Park is located within the Amirthi Forest Range of the Vellore Forest Division in Vellore District, Tamil Nadu, India. It is situated at the foothills of the Thellai Reserve Forest area and established with the objective of providing regeneration and raising awareness about wildlife conservation. Notably, Amirthi serves as a gateway to two destinations: Jamunamarathur and the Kavalur Observatory, one of the largest observatories in Asia, accessible via a scenic route through forest and tribal areas.
The zoo is conveniently located approximately 25 km from Vellore City and about 150 km from Chennai. It has good connections of road and railway. Importantly, it is the sole zoo in Vellore District and serves as a vital resource for neighboring districts along the riverbanks of Tiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Tiruvallur.
Amirthi Zoological Park is in the category of a mini zoo primarily serves as an educational center to raise awareness among visitors about the wildlife found in the eastern and western ghats. While the zoo does have some common and smaller animals in its collection, breeding programs for major species have not been established. Currently, a few species are displaying breeding behaviors.
The Vellore Amirthi Zoological Park mission is to become a hub for wildlife conservation, research, education about fauna and flora and a reference point for information on the wildlife of the Eastern Ghats. This mission is driven by a global concern for preserving local species and natural ecosystems as well as educating visitors on the importance of modifying human behavior. The park aims to inspire empathy in visitors for wild animals and foster an understanding of the vital need for nature and natural resource conservation. This will be achieved through practices that promote animal welfare, ongoing research, conservation efforts and educational initiatives.
